It was a project for the Christmas holidays. I had just acquired my first ferret, Chloe, in September of 1997. (Chloe is the ferret featured in the background of this page.) Chloe was a stray the my uncle found in his front yard. Honest! I put this page together because I did a lot of research to learn about how to best care for my new pet and I wanted to put the best sites I found all together in one spot. I get a lot of email thanking me for my work on this site and offering wonderful suggestions. If you have a favorite site that I missed, PLEASE send an email to me. If you've been a regular visitor to my site you may have noticed that I stopped all updates during the summer. I'm ready now to talk about why. Chloe died this summer. I took her to the vet as soon as I noticed that she was ill. They said that she was dehydrated, and admitted her to the "hospital" and began giving her fluids, but she died a couple of days later. It was really hard for me to deal with her death. She's the first pet I've lost in a long time. Anyway, the point is that I'll need your help to keep this page up to date. I haven't been reading the Ferret Mailing List, or checking the newsgroup. It's been too much of a reminder of Chloe. So I haven't been hearing about the great new websites that I'm sure are going up. If you know of one, please let me know. If you made it this far in my explanation, I want to thank you for listening. And, I hope, understanding. --AmyFerret FundamentalsThe Ferret FAQ --This is an extensive document about ferrets including information about ferret care, medical information, training, feeding, etc. Versions of the FAQ translated into other languages, and supplements to the FAQ (i.e. medical information on specific diseases) can be found at Ferret Central. The Ferret Mailing List --This is a complement to the ferret FAQ. This is a mailing that deals solely with ferrets. It is a forum where you can ask questions and receive knowledgeable answers, receive support, or simply listen in and learn from others' questions and comments. Subscribe to the FML (Ferret Mailing List) by sending email to listserv@cunyvm.cuny.edu and typing "subscribe FML" in the body of the email.Archives of the FML --Here are all the issues of the FML from December 1994 through March 1998. Current issues are added periodically while issues prior to December 1994 are being added as they are converted to the proper format. The archive also offers a search function. If you have a question it is well worth going to this site and doing a search for a key word or two. There is a wealth of information to be found in these past issues. The Ferret Newsgroup --This newsgroup is a great way to get answers/opinions quickly, or to simply share good news of your own. The newsgroup is alt.pets.ferrets.The Ferret Owner's Manual --This is a great basic information pamphlet that outlines useful topics such as cages, food, litterboxes, ferret proofing, common behaviors, vaccinations, and grooming (much more too). My opinion is that this document is geared towards those who are thinking of getting their first ferret, or those who just acquired/purchased their first ferret. It is (or should be) a familiar review for experienced ferret owners.Dinky's FAQ --This is a another good basic information document, less extensive than The Ferret FAQ, that outlines useful topics such as understandingferrets, grooming and bathing, proper nutrition, and housing and equipment. My opinion is that this document is also geared towards those who are thinking of getting their first ferret, or those who just acquired/purchased their first ferret. It is (or should be) a familiar review for experienced ferret owners. Note: Go down to the bottom of the page for the menu.Ferret Supplies OnlineThe Ferret Store --The ferret store carries all sorts of ferret products and supplies including food, litter, cages, grooming accessories, cage accessories, etc. They also have ferret products for humans. These include t-shirts, books, etc. The nice thing about this store is that they don't charge shipping and handling. Lambriar Animal Health Care, LLC --This company also carries ferret supplies.Pet Expo --This company offers ferret (and other pet) supplies at some of the best prices I've located on the web. However, their site is somewhat difficult to navigate. I would suggest either bringing up the product index (alphabetized supplies), or going to the bottom of the page and starting with small animals > ferrets.Cheweasel --This is a site that gives product and ordering information about a wonderful chew toy for ferrets. The star-shaped toy is completely edible and most ferrets go crazy after it.Kansas Bank Note Company, Inc. --This bank offers ferret checks. I am told that if you write to them or call, they will send a free sample. Checks can then be ordered. Since I recently ordered checks from another source I have not actually tried this myself. If anyone has already ordered, or does order, let me know what you think. One visitor, Debbie Hunton, has already emailed me with her opinion. "I ordered ferret checks from Kansas Bank Note Company, and they are very good, and cheaper than what I could get from my bank. They were pretty quick, and the samples are terrific for giving you a look at what you will be getting." Kansas Bank Note301 North FifthPO Box 360Fredonia, Kansas 66736316-378-3026Ferret Nutrition and FoodsNot all of these references make this particular point clear. When investigating these resources and making decisions about which food to feed your ferret, keep in mind that ferrets require 35% protein and 20% fat in any food that you feed them. You also want the major protein sources (at least thetop three ingredients) to be from meat, not grains or fish.Article: What's in Pet Food --This is a wonderful informational article about the ingredients found in pet foods. It includes a glossary of terms commonly found in the ingredient list on pet food labels.Article: Understanding Pet Food Labels --This article gives information about how to interpret and compare the information on pet food labels.Ferret Food Chart--This is a food chart. It doesn't distinguish between food for kits/adults, but it has several wonderful features. First, it is color coded -- you should give second thoughts to foods with lots of items in yellow or red. Second, it has links to those foods/companies with web pages. Very nice!!Natura Pet Products --This is the web page for Natura Pet Products, pet foods made from human grade foods. The product of interest to ferret owners is Innova Feline. If you cannot find it locally, you can order from the company by sending email to wbrandt@pacbell.net or by calling 1-800-532-7261. The company charges $16.00 for a 6.6 lb. bag and $31.95 for a 16.5 lb. bag including shipping and handling. Specific product information can be found at the Natura Pet Products site. I like this product for its ingredient list and for the high protien and fat content. This is part of the mixture I feed my ferret and cats.Ferret CommunityFerret Finder International --This is an site which links people who would like to adopt a ferret with groups and individuals who have ferrets available for adoption. A very nice service in my opinion!List of Ferret Shelters --This is a list of ferret shelters and their addresses that I got from the FML. It was suggested on the FML that anyone interested send a dollar each to five or ten shelters every month. If even 500 of the almost 3000 people on the Ferret Mailing List did this, think what a difference it could make for a shelter! Other ideas include sending an encouraging email, donating ferret gifts/supplies, volunteering hands-on help to a shelter in your area, or contributing directly to their veterinary expenses.Californians for Ferret Legalization --This is the website for an organization called Californians for Ferret Legalization. They are the sponsors of the legalization bill in California. Visitors can help by writing to the governor, Sierra Club, and the Audobon Society. See the site for more information.Ferret ExtrasClip Art, Desktop Themes, Electronic Postcards, Calendars, Figurines, Survey, Etc.OFA Ferret Clip Art --This is a page in the Oregon Ferret Association web site that has buttons and backgrounds, windows icons, and other clip art. A. J.'s Ferret Animated Gifs Page --This is a page that offers multiple animated ferret gifs. The Stationary Ferret --This is the page of a company that offers ferret stationary and cards. They will also do custom illustrations of your ferrets. They're offering two disks of ferret clip arttoo. One is of black and white illustrations, and one is of cartoons. I haven'tordered the disks myself, so I can't vouch for the quality. If anyone has orderedthem, or does order them, please email me and let me know what you think.Ferret Desktop Theme --This is a page that offers two free ferret desktop themes for windows. You can also download a file of extra ferret icons.Corrie's Ferret Backgrounds --This is a beautiful collection of ferret backgrounds offered in a variety of colors available for downloading.Ferret's Net Postcards --Send free ferret electronic postcards.PetPro --This is a site that offers multiple ferret products including an alternate (or addition for those of us who would like two) to the ever popular The Ferret Calendar. The site also features multiple figurines and plaques (I believe of the black footed ferret) and leashes and collars. Well worth checking out.The Ferret Company --This is a site that offeres a calendar with extraordinary ferret photographs. Ferret greeting cards and T-shirts are also available.Artistic Products for Pet Lovers --This is a site that offeres several products featuring ferrets including prints, notecards, and shirts/sweatshirts. My favorite is an extraordinary full color print of several ferrets attempting to raid the kitchen cupboards for a box of raisins.Just for Fun Ferret Survey --This is a survey I'm running to find out who's visited and a little bit about their ferrets.Let me quickly mention two programs that I've discovered on the net that I really enjoy. The first is AllAdvantage, a program that allows you to earn money while you browse the web by running their advertising banner across the bottom of the monitor. You can also earn money for the time your friends spend browsing, and their friends, and their friends, etc. You won't make a living this way, but it can get you a little extra spending money. The second is My Points, a program in which you earn points in a variety of ways including answering surveys, visiting web sites, buying products, taking advantage of trial offers, etc. It is fairly easy to earn points and they actually have nice ways to spend them including gift certificates to bookstores, restaurants, clothing stores, calling cards, and frequent flier miles to name just a few.Join AllAdvantage.comJoin the MyPoints Program.
