High Green: Methods for Realistic Scenery
In the last installment we left off with laying track and turnouts, a large step in making this mass of plywood look more like a transportation system. In the next installments we'll be taking a look at creating realistic scenery, from rural to city. Scenery makes running trains all that much more like the real thing and can help you get that motivation to work on the layout, so let’s get to planting!
Book Review: The Call of Trains: Railroad Photographs by Jim Shaughnessy (with text by Jeff Brouws)
I took me a while to assemble my thoughts for this review, due to the depth of material presented. I explored the work from many angles, trying my best to understand the photographer and what drives him. The theme of this review will be creativity within the greater context. Going back to our theme of context, I am going to try to offer my impressions of The Call of Trains based on my own unique experiences as a young photographer.

August 4, 2008 - This time we’re under fire
Despite all the claims from Homeland Security about making the areas around them safer from intrusion, railroads are generally wide open and clearly exposed to threat. In the days and years before the 9/11 attacks, there have been all sorts of security issues with regards to railroads. You cannot feasibly fence off all rail lines or build some sort of barriers around them. So as a result of this shortcoming, any nutcase, kook or weirdo can wreak some sort of havoc around the railroad. In many instances, some of these nut jobs decide it is funny or amusing to open fire on passing trains. It is by no means rare and has been happening for years. I have been a target on more than one instance in my career. So with that in mind, we will look at open season on trains, from the receiving end.

For me, it was love at first sight. The A&A owned two different 44-tonners, and also a 65-tonner. Each was quite similar in appearance, but each also had their special traits. I wanted one of each.
